Could a raw-food diet have an impact on cancer survival? ... March
31, 2008
A raw-food diet – basically raw fruits, vegetables and whole
grains – has plenty of advocates, but whether it's the right
choice for a cancer patient is open to question. In a matter of
seconds, you can find numerous testimonials online about its
health benefits. However, finding peer-reviewed scientific
studies, much less specific research on raw foods and cancer, is
harder... cont... |

sudsing bedroom windows, three adventurous Courant staffers are

begin a 30-day challenge to get healthy by eating a diet of only

Raw food diet gains popularity ... March
30, 2008
Fruits. Sprouts. Nuts. Grains. Seaweed? The common factor
between all of these food products is that they are part of the
raw food diet. The raw food diet is becoming increasingly
popular, especially on the West Coast. Raw food restaurants have
opened up all around the world, including five restaurants in
Boston. The diet consists of unprocessed, uncooked or organic
foods, which means that this diet is at least 70 percent
uncooked. The different foods include fresh vegan foods, all raw
fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, sprouts, root vegetables
and squashes, fresh herbs and raw spices and seaweeds... cont... |

Western diet poses health risks ... March
26, 2008
Lack of mobility in later years is forcing seniors of Chinese
descent to adopt western cuisine but the convenience of the
neighbourhood grocery store may be killing them, University of
Calgary researchers said today. Switching to a more
western-style diet in later years is putting seniors of Chinese
descent in North America at higher risk of contracting a number
of deadly diseases compared to their counterparts in their
ancestral land, said masters in nursing student and U of C
researcher Xianmei Meng. “Chinese seniors here in North America
have a higher risk of diabetes and some forms of cancers, due to
the high-fat, low-fibre diet in North America,” she said... cont... |

Green's the best color to add your palate ... March
26, 2008
"Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants," declares the cover of
Michael Pollan's newest book, "In Defense of Food." The title
and subtitle pretty well sum up Pollan's point of view. To him,
food is the key word to defend. Simply put, you should not
consider something food if your great grandmother would not
recognize it as food. What we have today are too many overly
processed items on the grocery shelf that do us more harm than
good. To Pollan, the basic problem with the American diet is
that nutritionists have asserted control of what we eat by
over-analyzing food, and from their studies making unwarranted
assertions about what is good for us... cont... |

Keeping in good shape in old age is harder for women ... March
25, 2008
Women aged 65-plus find it harder than men of the same age to
preserve muscle — which probably impacts on their ability to
stay as strong and fit, according to new research. For the first
time, scientists have shown that it is more difficult for women
to replace muscle that is lost naturally as they get older —
because of key differences in the way their bodies react to
food. In a paper published in the Public Library of Science (PLoS)
One, experts at Washington University School of Medicine in St
Louis, Missouri, USA and The University of Nottingham, UK
discovered that post-menopausal women were less able to respond
to food to build muscle mass whereas men of the same age (65-80
years old) were able to store protein in muscle...

Bulimia – Spotting the Symptoms and Causes of Bulimia ... March 24, 2008
Bulimia is an eating disorder. Someone with bulimia might binge
on food and then vomit (also called purge) in a cycle of binging
and purging. Binge eating refers to quickly eating large amounts
of food over short periods of time. Purging involves forced
vomiting, laxative use, excessive exercise, or fasting in an
attempt to lose weight that might be gained from eating food or
binging. Bulimia, also called bulimia nervosa, is a disorder in
the eating disorder spectrum. Bulimia is characterized by
episodes of secretive excessive eating (bingeing) followed by
inappropriate methods of weight control, such as self-induced
vomiting (purging), abuse of laxatives and diuretics, or
excessive exercise. Like anorexia, bulimia is a psychological
disorder... cont... |

Make healthy food choices to prevent getting diabetes ... March
24, 2008
The American Diabetes Association has designated Tuesday as its
annual American Diabetes Alert Day. The one-day event was
created to raise awareness about this growing problem in the
U.S. population. There are several forms of diabetes, but the
most common is Type 2 diabetes wherein the body produces less
insulin than normal and is unable to efficiently use the insulin
it produces. People who are overweight, lack regular exercise
and are over the age of 45 are at increased risk of developing
this form of diabetes. In addition to seeing a health care
provider regularly, making healthy food choices and getting
regular exercise are two major strategies for preventing or
delaying the onset of diabetes... cont... |

Raw Truth: Improve energy, focus with raw food diet ...
March 12, 2008
Sluggish, depressed, grieving the untimely death
of a sister, Heather Bishop finally gave in to her other sister,
Dawn Bishop, to bust out of the doldrums by doing something new.
Or more to the point, un-doing something old. Heather, a
committed vegan, stopped cooking and switched to eating only raw
food. "I promised my sister I would do it for three days only,"
said Heather, who runs Bishop's Bail Bonds with her father,
Holly Bishop. But three days was all it took to hook the
Longview woman on a diet even more stringent than veganism. "I
felt so different," she said. "I had more energy and focus; I
didn't need as much sleep."...

Low-Fat Dairy Reduces High Blood Pressure Risk ...
March 11, 2008
Reducing the risk of high blood pressure may be as simple as
drinking low-fat milk with meals, according to new research.
Women over age 45 who regularly consumed three or more daily
servings of low-fat dairy products were 11 percent less likely
to develop high blood pressure. Researchers at the Brigham and
Women's Hospital in Boston attributed the benefit to food
sources of calcium and vitamin D because the preventative effect
was not evident in participants taking dietary supplements.
Study results appeared in the February 7, 2008, special edition
of the journal Hypertension... cont... |

The Cholesterol Battle: How to Win It Naturally ... March
11, 2008
When the human blood cholesterol level is higher than that which
can be used by the human body, the surplus cholesterol may
eventually cause strokes, and or cardiovascular distress.
Medications, such as statins, prescribed to lower the blood
cholesterol are themselves known to affect our bodies negatively
in the long term. A healthy liver manufactures most of our daily
essential cholesterol requirements. Additional cholesterol in
the foods we eat is absorbed in the intestines and elevates the
blood cholesterol. According to the American Heart Association
(AHA), in order to avoid having excessive blood cholesterol,
most of us should limit our daily cholesterol intake from foods
to 300 mg. In the event we cannot stay within the 300 mg limit,
there are foods and natural supplements that can significantly
lower blood cholesterol... cont... |

World health leaders tout merits of vegetarian diet ...
March 11, 2008
A vegetarian diet not only protects personal health, but may
also help conserve the environment, world health leaders
concluded at a conference on vegetarianism hosted by Seventh-day
Adventist-owned Loma Linda University in California. Organized
25 years ago by a group of largely Adventist health
professionals, the International Congress on Vegetarian
Nutrition drew more than 700 attendees this year. Adventists
helped establish the benefits of a vegetarian diet, which prior
to 1950 was viewed with "great skepticism...

Carol Lervick couldn't believe it. The 53-year-old Stanwood

mother to a 25-year-old daughter and a 28-year-son, was beaming
by the time she returned to her car. "I called my husband right

Is organic food worth the money? ... March 10, 2008
It definitely is worth paying more for meats, cheeses, milk and
eggs. If you have a limited budget for organics, that’s where
you should splurge. “You’ll get a noticeably denser, richer
product,” says Bishop, and you’ll get the biggest health
benefits too. Animal proteins make up a large part of most
people’s diet, says Rubino, and proteins take the longest time
to digest, so going organic in this area will significantly
reduce your exposure to growth hormones and other harmful
chemicals... cont... |

A Whole Body Detox ...
With each passing decade since the end of World War II our
planet has become silently, yet increasingly, toxic as
pollutants from pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, industrial
chemicals and other residual offenders choke the land, water and
air that sustain us. As our planet becomes dangerously congested
with debris so do our bodies, as evidenced by the alarming rate
of deaths due to preventable illness and disease. We are neither
helpless nor hopeless in this dire state, and just as we can
strive to minimize our imprint on the planet, we can also take
measures to reduce, eliminate and cleanse toxins from the blood,
tissues and organs of our bodies. One of several effective
methods of detoxification is through lymphatic cleansing...
